3 weeks agoWe were asked to leave The Coconut Kitchen because my partner was wearing a cap — something he always wears, even on our wedding day — and this completely overshadowed what had otherwise been a great dining experience. The food itself was genuinely amazing, with incredible flavours and obvious skill from the kitchen. However, this issue was only raised after we had finished our meal and paid the bill. We were then told that due to “recent events” and council days there was a no-caps policy. If this was the case, why wasn’t it explained on arrival, before seating, or before we ordered? Being confronted after payment felt unnecessary and poorly handled. It also raises a wider concern. Policies like this can easily cross into discrimination if applied without consideration. Many people wear caps for valid reasons — alopecia, medical conditions, anxiety, religious reasons, or personal comfort. You can’t reasonably enforce a blanket rule without thinking about who it may exclude, otherwise it opens the door to discriminating against far more than just “caps”. It’s such a shame, because the food truly deserves praise — but hospitality is about how people are treated, not just what’s on the plate.
