No.1 Ship Street is Oxford’s award winning, independent, ‘Modern British Brasserie’ Voted Oxfordshire’s BEST RESTAURANT 2020 – 2023, it is a Modern British Brasserie set over two floors. A La Carte Menu and daily specials board with oysters, lobster and market fish of the day.
The worst clam linguini I've had. 10 clean shells of which 3 had clams in them. I pointed this out to the waiter and was eventually brought a small bowl of clams (which doesn't fix the dish where they should be cooked in the pasta) but the waiter was very grumpy from them on. My partners wild mushroom and artichoke risotto was fairly tasteless. It is obviously very popular but we didn't linger for pudding and won't be back.
What a disaster.
Booked to celebrate my sisters birthday.
We were pointed to our table - not escorted.
To be fair the decor is lovely and the Xmas decorations make the room cosy and inviting.
We asked for a bottle of tap water - thank god we did. It was 40 minutes later before we persuaded the waiter to get a drink for us. The pinot was adequate.
At 2010 they’d already run out of clam linguine- but the waiter didn’t know.
The coq au vin was ok.
When we asked for the bill it came immediately and with a 12.5% service charge. Safe to say we won’t be returning.
Very disappointing.
Today we had an great food experience at the restaurant. But the sign Outside in the corner of the street offered a Lunch deal that atracttedus ti walk in for umpromotu Lunch. We sit at the restaurant and asked to the waiter about the set menu lunch deal advertised. He said it was not available. We were disapointed and felt deceived. No a knowlwdgement of the mistake was made nor they removed the sign. Not what we'd expect from a serious restaurant.
Back after many years to find the Restaurant in full swing which is great. We had a really nice server who was super helpful throughout. Food was first class, all courses. Very flavourful meats and the sauces/jus so rich. Nice to find cheeses which were slightly different to the usual standard fare and very tasty home made crackers to accompany. The one thing we'd prefer is the quince and almond tart seemed more like a cake than a tart, but again very tasty. Good selection of wines, with a nice 'rest of the world' selection. Wont wait as long to return again.
